چکیده

The effect of the surface roughness of solid atmospheric aerosol particles on their heterogeneous nucleation capability has been examined using the concept of Aself-affineB rough surfaces. The surface roughness has a great influence on the contact angle between the particle surface and the nucleating liquid droplets. Roughness enhances wetting and the rate of heterogeneous nucleation from the vapor to the liquid phase. The paper furthermore discusses the considerable influence of the surface roughness on the physico-chemical characteristics of atmospheric insoluble aerosol particles. q 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. The susceptibility of ice formation in upper tropospheric clouds to insoluble aerosol components

Ice may form by both homogeneous and heterogeneous freezing nucleation processes in clouds at temperatures below -3 5øC. Most investigations have focused on the former process. This paper presents results from adiabatic parcel model calculations that include the effects of both freezing processes in unactivated solution droplets. Uncertainties in predicting the homogeneous freezing rates are di...

Tuning ice nucleation with counterions on polyelectrolyte brush surfaces

Heterogeneous ice nucleation (HIN) on ionic surfaces is ubiquitous in a wide range of atmospheric aerosols and at biological interfaces. Despite its great importance in cirrus cloud formation and cryopreservation of cells, organs, and tissues, it remains unclear whether the ion-specific effect on ice nucleation exists. Benefiting from the fact that ions at the polyelectrolyte brush (PB)/water i...

Observing the formation of ice and organic crystals in active sites.

Heterogeneous nucleation is vital to a wide range of areas as diverse as ice nucleation on atmospheric aerosols and the fabrication of high-performance thin films. There is excellent evidence that surface topography is a key factor in directing crystallization in real systems; however, the mechanisms by which nanoscale pits and pores promote nucleation remain unclear. Here, we use natural cleav...

Do atmospheric aerosols form glasses?

A new process is presented by which water soluble organics might influence ice nucleation, ice growth, chemical reactions and water uptake of aerosols in the upper troposphere: the formation of glassy aerosol particles. Glasses are disordered amorphous (non-crystalline) solids that form when a liquid is cooled without crystallization until the viscosity increases exponentially and molecular dif...

Effects of surface interactions on heterogeneous ice nucleation for a monatomic water model.

Despite its importance in atmospheric science, much remains unknown about the microscopic mechanism of heterogeneous ice nucleation. In this work, we perform hybrid Monte Carlo simulations of the heterogeneous nucleation of ice on a range of generic surfaces, both flat and structured, in order to probe the underlying factors affecting the nucleation process. The structured surfaces we study com...
